History of the school
Our school opened in the 1983/84 school year on the residential area that was under construction at that time. In 1986 about 2200 children started the new school year due to the rising number of the families moved in the neighbourhood. In some years there were reached up to 12 classes. After the 1080 m2 sports court had been built. P.E. lessons and drawing courses were introduced and English courses started for the 3rd year students. Eight new classrooms were built in the 1992/93 school year. The maximum capacity was reached in 1990/91. when 2400 students were taught by 207 teachers in 95 classes. From 1989/90 – with permission from the department- the school started a talent-development program with one class. The students in this class learned English and Russian language. The children studied dance and instrumental music as well. The year 1992/93 brought changes in the life of the institute. A new course started which provided further possibilities for the children who failed the high school examination after the 8. grade. With the help of this program the participant received a knowledge that was useful in finding a job in small entertainment facilities or as a social or dispensary worker. According to the local government’s decision the Pesti Street Elementary School and the Újlak Street Elementary School were united in September of 1995 as the number of children kept dropping. From 2001/2002 the education of German nationality children was placed in the school. This feature helped the education of German nationals of Rákosmente. Hungarian–English dual language education was introduced in 2006 to offer families a wider range of possibilities to choose from. Because of the falling interest, the high standard drawing and P.E. education ended. Our colleagues are organising ambitious competitions to fill the gap. The school’s present-day headcount has risen up to 900. Our main goal is to think of “Újlak” with contentment.
